Oklahoma Birth Defects Registry

The Oklahoma Birth Defects Registry is an active, population-based, public health surveillance system. The mission of the Oklahoma Birth Defects Registry is to protect and promote the health of Oklahomans through statewide surveillance and investigation, thereby identifying opportunities to prevent, optimize early detection of birth defects, and reduce infant mortality. The Oklahoma Birth Defects Registry strives to improve the quality of life for both babies diagnosed with a birth defect and their families by serving as a resource for education, awareness, and advocacy.

• Connect families to SoonerStart. SoonerStart is Oklahoma's early intervention program designed to meet the needs of infants and toddlers with disabilities and developmental delays.
• Connect families to Oklahoma Family Network (OFN). OFN is a parent-to-parent network which connects families with other families who have children with similar disabilities.
• Provides multivitamins containing folic acid to county health departments for distribution to women of childbearing age.
• Perform educational outreach activities across the state to reduce the risk of having a baby with a birth defect.

• Every child born in Oklahoma with an eligible birth defect will have their medical record reviewed to determine if the child meets requirements to be entered into the Oklahoma Birth Defects Registry.
