Open Minds: Tutor Training Program

Training for Tutors of Basic Literacy and English Language Learners

Open Minds, Oklahoma’s tutor training model, was launched in 2003 with support from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Trainers from 17 local programs piloted the workshop model across the state. Since then, the program has evolved to meet the changing needs of Oklahoma literacy programs, volunteer tutors, and the learners they serve.

The flexible model is delivered in three 3-hour interactive sessions. Topics include:

  • Setting learner goals

  • Using the Language Experience Approach

  • Working within a core literacy curriculum

  • Integrating reading and writing strategies

  • Using real-world materials

Trainers present content through a variety of formats, including demonstrations, paired practice, group work, and video.

In addition to the 9-hour foundational training, many Open Minds trainers offer at least one in-service or continuing education opportunity annually for local tutors.

The development of the Open Minds project was made possible thanks to Library Services and Technology Act funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and dedicated trainers throughout the state.
