The boil order for Fairview Public Water Supply in Major County remains in effect due to the confirmed presence of E. coli in the drinking water. The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) recommends that anyone who uses Fairview’s drinking water bring the water to a full, rolling boil for one minute before:
- Drinking the water
- Preparing food
- Making baby formula
- Making ice
- Brushing teeth
- Washing dishes
- Bathing infants who may drink bath water
- Cleaning open wounds
Boiling the water kills bacteria. Alternatively, use bottled water or another acceptable source for consumption. Fecal coliforms and E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal waste. Microbes in these wastes can cause short-term effects, such as gastrointestinal upset, headaches, or other symptoms. These symptoms are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, DEQ recommends that you seek medical advice from a health care provider.
Bacterial contamination can occur when increased run-off enters the drinking water source (for example, following heavy rains). It can also happen due to a break in the distribution system (pipes) or a failure in the water treatment process.
An assessment of the water system has been conducted, and additional sampling is ongoing. Users will be notified when the water is considered safe for human consumption. Federal law requires that consumers be notified when a public water supply exceeds certain maximum contaminant levels and might be harmful to the health of consumers.
