Electrical Journeyman

Step 1: Work as an Apprentice

Before becoming a Journeyman you must first train as an apprentice. Please see the requirements and registration for electrical apprentices.

Step 2: Take the Journeyman Exam

Submit the application provided below. Once your application is approved and you are eligible for examination, you will be provided the contact information of the third-party testing vendor who you will contact to set the date, time and location of the examination.

Step 3: Work as a Journeyman

Work for an active, licensed Electrical Contractor, obtaining the required number of hours in the type of experience required (residential, commercial, industrial) for the category sought.

Journeyman Categories and Requirements

8,000 Verifiable hours on the job experience in the electrical construction trade as a registered apprentice under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman or licensed contractor
4,000 hours must be in commercial/ industrial work
2,000 hours may be satisfied by formal electrical education*

4,000 Verifiable hours on the job experience in the electrical construction trade as a registered apprentice under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman or licensed contractor
1,000 hours may be satisfied by formal electrical education*

In good standing

*Educational Experience must be actual, classroom hours verified with a transcript

Endorsements and Alternative Licenses

Alarm Endorsement

An Alarm Endorsement involving a criminal history check is required before anyone can begin work described in the Electrical Industry regulations as work requiring an alarm endorsement.
