General FAQs
General Contractors are not currently required to have a state license in Oklahoma.
No. The CIB does not have authority to “permit” specific work, only to regulate the qualifications and responsibilities of the licensed or registered worker performing the work and enforce the statewide adopted building codes for plumbing, electrical and mechanical work in geographic areas that have adopted statewide codes but do not employ a building and construction inspector. This is usually in rural areas or smaller jurisdictions.
Yes. If you are installing, modifying, or altering plumbing, electrical, or mechanical systems on any property in cities or towns that have not adopted a State recognized code, do not require permits, does not have an appointed inspector or perform inspections in the related trade, you must provide notice to the CIB. See Notification Of Work Without Permit form.
There is no statutory requirement for plumbing, electrical and mechanical construction work to be inspected by the CIB. The CIB performs inspections when requested on plumbing, electrical and mechanical work outside of jurisdictions having authority where there is no inspector and when investigating a complaint on unlicensed, unregistered activity or compliance with the state adopted codes, especially when it involves life safety.
The CIB no longer adopts any statewide plumbing, electrical, mechanical building codes. All statewide building codes are adopted by the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission. The current statewide plumbing, electrical, mechanical, residential and commercial building codes are the codes revised and adopted by the OUBCC. Please see OUBCC website for the OUBCC statewide adopted building codes.
The CIB trade approved license/registration examinations test over the current statewide OUBCC adopted code. The CIB inspects and performs plan reviews using the current statewide OUBCC adopted code. CE courses for credit to renew a license or registration must be approved by the respective examining committee and be in compliance with current administrative rules of that trade.
