New Program for Student Electrical Apprentices Signed into Law

Governor Kevin Stitt signed Senate Bill 1572 into law on May 28th, 2024. This bill replaces the Electrical Student Intern Program with an Electrical Student Apprentice program. This new law is effective as of November 1, 2024.

Requirements for Electrical Student Apprentices

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Enrolled in high school and enrolled in a work-ready or similar program
  • Employed with an active licensed electrical contractor.

What's the difference between Electrical Student Apprentices and Electrical Apprentices?

Student Electrical Apprentice

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Only allowed to work during the school year
  • Limited to 500 hours/per school year counted toward journeymen/contractor license requirement
  • Must be supervised by a licensed electrical journeyman or contractor
  • Must be employed by a licensed electrical contractor
  • One Student Electrical Apprentice is allowed per worksite
  • Must be enrolled in high school and enrolled in a work-ready or similar program
  • Exempt from Oklahoma's continuing education requirements

Electrical Apprentice

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Allowed to work year-round
  • Unlimited number of hours counted toward journeyman/contractor license
  • Must be supervised by a licensed electrical journeyman or contractor
  • Must be employed by a licensed electrical contractor
  • Unlimited per worksite as long as sufficient supervision is present as outlined by state law
  • Starting January 1, 2026, electrical apprentices must complete 3 hours of continuing education per year.
