OKLAHOMA CITY (October 24, 2023) — As the season changes and the air turns crisp, families across Oklahoma are getting ready for Halloween. Shape Your Future, a program of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET), has healthy tricks and treats for Oklahomans during this sugar-filled season.
“We know it’s hard to resist candy during Halloween,” said Julie Bisbee, TSET executive director. “That’s why we’re sharing resources to help find a balance. We want the holiday to be a fun time for families to spend quality time together while avoiding the sugary crashes that impact health and might cut trick-or-treating short.”
On Halloween, the average American child consumes about three cups of sugar, or 144 teaspoons. It is recommended children aged two to 18 should have less than six teaspoons of added sugars daily. This year, Shape Your Future has ways to scare away the sugar monster with naturally sweet swaps, including:
- Pumpkin-Shaped Vegetable Tray
- Clementine Pumpkins
- Orange and Black Fruit Kabobs
- Stovetop Popcorn
- Alternatives for Trick-or-Treaters
Along with choosing healthier treats, families can get moving with Shape Your Future’s fun and active Halloween scavenger hunts. Whether they are hunting for festive costumes or spooky house decorations, families can get in some physical activity while creating new memories and traditions.
