OKLAHOMA CITY (August 8, 2019) – State Treasurer Randy McDaniel has appointed Tulsa businessman Jack Allen, Jr. to the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET).
Allen is Chairman Emeritus of HUB International CFR and will represent Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District on the Board.
“It is honor to be appointed to the TSET Board of Directors to represent the interests of the Tulsa area,” Allen said. “I look forward to serving the citizens of this state and working for ways to improve the health of all Oklahomans.”
The 1st Congressional District was previously represented by Don Millican of Tulsa whose term ended June 30.
Allen received his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University (OSU) and holds the accreditation of Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC). He belongs to the Independent Agents Association and serves on the Board of Governors for the OSU Foundation. He is also a member of the OSU School of Business Hall of Fame.
Allen worked in the insurance industry for more than four decades and grew Tulsa insurance agency CFR from 12 employees to more than 100 before selling the company to HUB International, one of the largest privately held insurance agencies in North America.
“With his extensive business experience and philanthropic work in health and education, Jack Allen brings deep insight and knowledge to the TSET Board of Directors,” McDaniel said. “His participation on the Board will make a valuable contribution to TSET’s important work helping Oklahomans live healthier lives.”
Allen speaks regularly to university classes on the topics of diversity, vision and management methodology and has taught in the OSU-Tulsa MBA program on contemporary management.
Allen has been involved with the Extension for Community Health Care Outcomes (Project ECHO) at the OSU Center for Health Sciences and at the University of New Mexico. He is also involved with the Alzheimer’s Association, the OSU Spears School of Business and the OSU School of Entrepreneurship. He has held advisory board positions with Hillcrest Hospital and Commerce Bank. Allen founded the Jack Allen Family Education Foundation, which is committed to improving public education and he currently serves as a Green Country Boy Scouts board member.
The TSET Board of Directors, appointed by seven different elected officials and representing each of the state’s five congressional districts, oversees the expenditure of the earnings to fund grants and programs to prevent and reduce tobacco use and obesity. The Board of Directors has also invested in cutting-edge research to reduce the toll of tobacco-related diseases on our state.
TSET is funded by a portion of the payments received by the State of Oklahoma as part of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement. The tobacco industry, found guilty of racketeering by a judge, makes an annual settlement payment to the states. Seventy-five percent of each payment is deposited in the endowment for investment. The earnings from the endowment fund grants and programs aimed at improving the health of Oklahomans.
TSET’s strategic plan aims to prevent and reduce tobacco use and obesity in an effort to reduce cancer and cardiovascular disease, the leading causes of death in Oklahoma.
