OKLAHOMA CITY –The City of Coweta (City) received approval for $128,000 in funding Tuesday from the Oklahoma Water Resources Board (OWRB) to improve the City’s water infrastructure. Construction of upgrades and improvements to the water system will be financed by the OWRB American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant program along with $128,000 from the Muscogee Creek Nation.

The City of Coweta is addressing the increased water demand from a new development by upgrading its existing water distribution system. The current 8-inch water main in the area is insufficient to support the new flow requirements once the development is complete. The proposed project involves upgrading approximately 1,900 linear feet of the 8-inch water main to a 12-inch water main, along with all necessary appurtenances to complete the work. The estimated cost of the project is $256,000.00, with funding provided by theOWRB ARPA grant for $128,000.00 and an additional $128,000.00 from the Muscogee Creek Nation.

Lori Johnson, chief of the OWRB’s Financial Assistance Division, calculated that the City’s customers will save an estimated $216,000.00 compared to traditional financing.

“This water infrastructure upgrade is a great investment in Coweta’s future,” said Senator Julie McIntosh, RPorter. “By expanding the capacity of the city’s water main system, we’re not only supporting new developments but also ensuring that our residents and businesses have access to reliable water services.”

"We are grateful to the Muscogee Creek Nation and to the Water Resources Board for their participation and approval of funding the expansion costs of this water main,” said Representative Mark Chapman, R-Broken Arrow. “This will be a great asset to the city of Coweta and a great help in economic development as this community continues to grow. "

“We are grateful to State Senator Julie McIntosh and State Representative Mark Chapman for their continued support of our financial assistance programs,” said Julie Cunningham, Executive Director of the OWRB.

The ARPA grant program is administered by the OWRB with funding from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and appropriated through the American Rescue Plan Act grants program. This OWRB program has been structured to provide communities and other eligible entities with the financial resources necessary to address water and wastewater infrastructure needs within their systems.

Since 1983 the Water Resources Board has approved over $7.7 billion in loans and grants for water and wastewater infrastructure improvements throughout Oklahoma.
