OKLAHOMA CITY – The Canadian Public Works Authority (Authority) in Pittsburg County received approval for a $99,999 Rural Economic Action Plan (REAP) grant on Tuesday through the Oklahoma Water Resources Board (OWRB) to improve the Authority’s wastewater infrastructure.

The Authority operates a wastewater collection system composed primarily of aging clay tile piping, which is contributing to significant inflow and infiltration (I&I) issues—where groundwater and stormwater enter the sewer system. To improve the system’s reliability and performance, the proposed project includes the removal and replacement of approximately 1,300 linear feet of 8-inch SDR-35 sewer line, installation of three new manholes, and reconnection of approximately ten existing service lines. The project will also include all necessary appurtenances to ensure complete and functional installation. These infrastructure improvements will help reduce I&I, protect the environment, and ensure regulatory compliance, while also lowering maintenance costs and improving service reliability for the community.

The estimated cost of the project is $99,999.00 which will be funded by the OWRB REAP grant in the amount of $99,999.00.

Lori Johnson, chief of the OWRB's Financial Assistance Division, calculated that the grant will save the Authority’s customers $185,600 in principal and interest charges by not having to borrow the project funds.

“With the support of the Canadian Public Works Authority and the generous funding provided through the OWRB REAP grant, we are addressing critical issues related to aging wastewater infrastructure,” said Sen. Warren Hamilton, R-McCurtain. “This $99,999 investment will replace outdated sewer lines, enhance system reliability, and ultimately result in a cleaner, safer community for generations to come.”

“I do appreciate the Water Resource Board working alongside KEDDO to fund this necessary project,” said Rep. Jim Grego, R-Wilburton. “Much of our water and sewer infrastructure is in dire need of updating in rural Oklahoma, this project is a start in the right direction.”

“We are grateful to Senator Warren Hamilton and Representative Jim Grego for their continued support of water and wastewater infrastructure funding in Oklahoma,” said Julie Cunningham, OWRB Executive Director.

Since 1983 the Water Resources Board has approved over $7.9 billion in loans and grants for water and wastewater infrastructure improvements throughout Oklahoma.
