Oklahoma City, OK – The federal government has reopened, and the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission (OESC) is providing guidance for federal employees and contractors who filed unemployment claims during the shutdown.
Federal employees should stop filing unemployment claims immediately. Any benefits received during the shutdown must be repaid once back pay is issued, and unpaid balances may be subject to interest and garnishment, as required by law. Claimants will soon receive overpayment notices by mail outlining next steps.
If you’d like to repay unemployment benefits now, please wait until OESC provides official repayment instructions. We’ll share details by mail soon.
OESC also reminds employees to report their return-to-work dates so claims can be updated promptly.
Government contractors who are not receiving back pay may still be eligible for unemployment benefits based on their earnings and work history.
"We understand the challenges federal employees and contractors face during shutdowns," said Chris O’Brien, Vice President of Unemployment Insurance for OESC. "Our priority is to make the repayment process as clear as possible and ensure those still in need of support receive timely assistance."
OESC and Oklahoma Works remain available to assist with claims, repayment questions, and employment services. Job Centers are open Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.
