Pedestrian Safety
Unfortunately, the rate of pedestrian fatalities in traffic crashes is on the rise nationwide — and everyone has been a pedestrian at some point. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a pedestrian is injured in a traffic crash every 9 minutes and killed every 71 minutes on average. This is why pedestrian safety is a major priority of the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office (OHSO).
With this in mind, drivers should always:
- Watch for pedestrians.
- Maintain safe speeds.
- Use headlights in the dark and bad weather.
- Avoid driving when drowsy or impaired by drugs and alcohol.
That said, the responsibility doesn’t fall solely on the drivers. To stay safe, follow the below safety tips.
