About Us
Established by the Oklahoma Legislature in 1967 under the Department of Public Safety, the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office (OHSO) is a direct result of the National Highway Safety Act of 1966, which aimed to combat the alarming increase in the frequency and severity of traffic crashes and fatalities.
OHSO’s vision for Oklahoma is to establish and maintain safe roadways for everyone. Our agency works closely with local government organizations, state agencies, law enforcement and others to develop the state’s Highway Safety Plan (HSP) and programs to address highway safety issues, which are federally funded through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Most of the activities within these programs fall under these areas:
- Traffic Safety Education
- Training
- Enforcement Enhancement
