The TSET Healthy Living Program: Investing in Oklahoma's Health

Half of all cancers are caused by obesity and tobacco use. Oklahoma has some of the highest rates of tobacco use and obesity in the nation. TSET Healthy Living Program grants are designed to prevent cancer and cardiovascular disease by preventing and reducing tobacco use and obesity on a local level. We currently issue grants to 28 organizations working in 30 counties.

The TSET Healthy Living Grant Program seeks to lessen the burden of unhealthy behaviors before they take root. Reducing the risk factors of tobacco use and obesity will save lives and money. Designed with input from former TSET grantees, partner organizations and nationally recognized experts, the TSET Healthy Living Program is in its second five-year grant cycle.

Healthy Lifestyle Grants

Oklahoma ranks 45th out of 50 states as one of the most food insecure states, according to 2019 America’s Health Rankings. In Oklahoma, 1 in 6 adults and 1 in 5 children struggle with hunger in Oklahoma, according to Feeding America. Lack of access or uncertainty in ability to obtain healthy foods have been associated with an increase in poor health outcomes, obesity and health care costs. The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened Oklahoman’s access and purchasing power for healthy and nutritious foods.

In 2019, the TSET Board of Directors approved a resolution in support of removing barriers to accessing healthy foods. To assist in this effort, the Board authorized the expenditure of up to $1 million for Food Systems Impact Grants.

Other Healthy Lifestyle Initiatives

Youth Action for Health Leadership (YAHL) is an initiative that allows youth to create a measurable impact by making lasting changes in nutrition, active-living, and tobacco policies. Teens can develop leadership skills and have the opportunity to earn community service hours while being directly involved in making their community and Oklahoma a healthier place.
