New to TRS

Welcome, New Members!

Congratulations on your new position in Oklahoma public education! Your employer is one of approximately 600 educational institutions across Oklahoma that participates in the Teachers' Retirement System of Oklahoma (TRS). As a new eligible employee, you're automatically enrolled as a TRS member.

What is TRS?

TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan (also known as a pension plan) that helps secure your financial future. Here's how it works: we invest contributions on your behalf and provide you with a guaranteed monthly income for life when you retire.

What This Means for You

As a TRS member, you're building toward a stable retirement benefit that will be there for you throughout your retirement years. This isn't just a savings account—it's a professional retirement system designed specifically for Oklahoma's educators.

You and your employer make monthly contributions

  • Every time you get paid, a portion of your paycheck automatically goes into your TRS retirement account. This money is always yours, even if you leave your job covered by TRS.

  • Your employer also contributes to TRS and TRS invests those dollars for you and all TRS members.

When you retire, you’ll receive monthly payments for life

  • When the time comes to retire, you will receive a monthly check from TRS for the rest of your life. Your pension lasts your entire life, no matter how long you live.

  • Your benefit is determined by the amount of time you work at your TRS-covered job, your age when you retire, and the average of your highest average salaries.

Changing jobs

  • If you get a new job at an employer that has TRS coverage, you will continue to build for your future retirement.

  • If you leave for a new job that is not covered under TRS, you can still collect a benefit in retirement if you are vested and leave your account with TRS, or you can choose to take a refund of your contributions and applicable interest.

Additional benefits from TRS

As an active TRS member, you receive valuable protection at no extra cost:

  • Survivor Benefits: All active and retired TRS members automatically receive survivor benefits as part of their membership. These benefits help protect your loved ones financially.

  • Disability Retirement: If you develop a medical disability during your employment in Oklahoma public education that prevents you from continuing to work, and meet other eligibility requirements, you may qualify for disability retirement benefits.

Contact your employer to update your name or address while an active member.
