As Alcohol Awareness Month coincides with prom season, the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) is reminding Oklahomans to plan ahead and make safe choices around alcohol use.
“Alcohol misuse can have real and lasting consequences for individuals and families,” said Division Director of Prevention Services Young Onuorah. “Planning ahead, especially during events like prom season, can help prevent situations that put lives at risk. Teens should know it is always okay to say no and to reach out to a trusted adult if they feel unsafe.”
Impaired driving remains one of the most immediate risks associated with alcohol use. Individuals and families can explore alcohol-free options, including mocktails now widely available at restaurants and venues, making it easier to choose not to drink in social settings. Adults who choose to drink should designate a sober driver or use alternative transportation.
- The warning signs of alcohol misuse may include:
- Increased tolerance or frequent drinking
- Difficulty cutting back or stopping
- Neglecting responsibilities at work, school, or home
- Using alcohol to cope with emotions
Oklahomans can access immediate support through the 988 Mental Health Lifeline, which offers free, confidential assistance 24/7 by calling or texting 988. Individuals can also find local treatment and recovery resources through OK I’m Ready.
Understanding the risks of alcohol use is key to making safer choices for yourself and your family. Get involved with coalitions to help strengthen communities at the local level. For those who may be struggling, recovery is possible and support is available across Oklahoma.
