In recognition of Maternal Mental Health Month, the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) is spotlighting Tough as a Mother (TAAM). The statewide initiative aims to reduce stigma and connect mothers with the support they need to overcome substance use and build healthier futures.
TAAM helps pregnant and parenting Oklahomans access compassionate, judgment-free care. Through personalized Family Care Plans, mothers can coordinate treatment, track their progress, and connect with a network of community-based services. The initiative encourages mothers facing substance use challenges to take that first step and reach out for help.
“Oklahoma is working to reduce the stigma that too often prevents pregnant and parenting mothers with substance use disorders from seeking help,” said Katie Harrison, Division Director of Addiction Services at ODMHSAS. “TAAM connects mothers with local treatment providers who can support them by providing confidential, judgment-free treatment, developing a personalized Family Care Plan and finding essential resources such as health care, legal aid, housing assistance, and family support services. Every mother deserves a chance to heal and build a healthy future for herself and her children."
Motherhood can be challenging, and the challenges can feel overwhelming for those navigating substance use. ODMHSAS is here to remind Oklahomans that they are not alone.
