Red Ribbon Week is back and ready to make a positive impact on the lives of children across Oklahoma. Taking place from October 23rd to 31st, this year's theme, "Be Kind to Your Mind. Live Drug-Free," emphasizes the importance of mental well-being and drug prevention for the younger generation. This campaign is an extension of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) back-to-school campaign. ODMHSAS is actively supporting the initiative by providing kids with coloring sheets, information, and resources to foster a drug-free environment.
ODMHSAS Commissioner Carrie Slatton-Hodges, a strong advocate for children's mental health, highlighted the significance of Red Ribbon Week: "This week is a crucial time for us to come together as a community and reinforce the importance of living drug-free. By empowering our children and teaching them to be kind to their minds, we can create a strong foundation for their future well-being."
ODMHSAS is partnering with Oklahoma City Public Schools and the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame to amplify the message of Red Ribbon Week. Together, they are encouraging parents to engage in open communication with their children about the dangers of substance abuse. 988 is featured on pages 27 and 28 as a printable coloring sheet and poster. Schools are encouraged to share their pictures with us on social media by tagging: The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services on Facebook or emailing DMHCommunications@odmhsas.org. We will pick one winner and send that student a 988 surprise! The coloring sheet must be submitted in advance by October 31.
"We believe that by talking to our children, we show them that we care and that we're here to support and guide them,” said President Mike James of the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame “When parents, teachers or coaches talk, children and teens hear you. The impact of those conversations can be truly transformative in shaping a drug-free future for our kids."
The ODMHSAS is partnering with the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame to amplify the message of Red Ribbon Week across the state. The two agencies are also partnering with the Oklahoma City Public Schools through their EmbraceOKC initiative, a comprehensive plan that focuses on student mental health and preventing substance use. Together, they are encouraging parents to engage in open communication with their children about the dangers of substance abuse.
President Mike James of the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame stressed the impact of these conversations, stating: "We believe that by talking to our children, we show them that we care and that we're here to support and guide them. When parents talk, they hear you and the impact of those conversations can be truly transformative in shaping a drug-free future for our kids."
The Skydance Bridge, Crystal Bridge, Tulsa Performing Arts Center and Gathering Place will illuminate red to commemorate Red Ribbon Week in Oklahoma.
