Tips for a Successful OSHA Consultation
Get the most out of your OSHA consultation with a little preparation. By being ready and proactive, you can make the process smoother, more efficient, and set your business on the path to a safer work environment.
How to Prepare for Your Consultation
Gather Important Documentation
Have the last four years of your OSHA 300, 300A, and 301 forms available (current year plus three prior years). If you'd like us to conduct a comparative analysis of your performance against others in your industry, send the OSHA 300A forms to us as soon as possible.Prepare Your OSHA Programs
Ensure any OSHA-required safety programs are ready for review. If you haven’t prepared them yet, no worries! Download free sample programs from our website to help you get started. Keep in mind, these will need to be customized to fit your specific workplace needs.Involve Your Top Team Members
For the consultation to be successful, your top management should participate in the opening and closing conferences. Make sure your key team members, like supervisors and maintenance staff, are available during the walk-through to address issues and act quickly on any recommendations.Be Ready to Act
Don’t wait! Correcting hazards on the spot during the consultation means less follow-up work later. Let’s use our time together to kickstart your safety improvements and keep the momentum going.
Hazard Corrections: Take Action Now
Your management team plays a vital role in ensuring a successful consultation. Be hands-on and ready to address hazards during the visit. While we understand that some serious hazards may require more time, we encourage you to correct any issues as soon as possible.
- If hazards cannot be resolved immediately, we will work with you to create a clear action plan, with target dates ranging from 10 to 30 days based on the severity of the issues.
- Interim safety measures may need to be put in place to protect employees until the full corrections can be made.
Written Report and Next Steps
After your consultation, you will receive a detailed written report with our findings and recommendations for correcting hazards. To keep things on track:
- Return your response forms to us with documentation of hazard corrections by the agreed-upon deadlines.
- Follow-up visits may occur to verify corrections and ensure ongoing compliance.
If extenuating circumstances arise, time extensions may be granted, but unjustifiable delays won’t be approved. Be sure to provide documentation of any interim controls and a clear action plan for completing corrections when requesting an extension.
Posting Hazard Lists
You will receive a list of serious hazards as part of your report. This list must be posted in a visible location where employees can view it and must remain posted until all hazards are corrected.
