The Oklahoma Department of Labor is seeking a detail-oriented and safety-focused individual to join our team as a Safety Inspector. This position plays a vital role in protecting Oklahomans by inspecting boilers, pressure vessels, and alternative fuel facilities to ensure compliance with national, state, and local safety codes and regulations. This role also includes community outreach and education, making it ideal for someone who enjoys combining technical work with public service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inspections of boilers, pressure vessels, and hot water heaters to ensure safe construction, installation, and operation.
  • Inspect and verify alternative fuel conversion shops, garages, and fueling stations for compliance with applicable codes (including NFPA 52).
  • Issue, suspend, or recommend certification based on inspection findings.
  • Review and approve repair and alteration methods, welding procedures, and welder qualifications.
  • Inspect steam lines and weld test facilities for compliance with the State Welding Act.
  • Review and process license applications for businesses servicing or installing boilers and pressure vessels.
  • Investigate accidents and complaints involving inspected equipment or alternative fuel facilities.
  • Perform outreach and educational activities to promote public and industry awareness of safety requirements.
  • Document inspection findings and prepare regular activity reports.

Minimum Qualifications:

Sixty (60) semester hours of college, including at least 12 hours in math or physical science, and one year of relevant experience in trades such as

  • Boilers, pressure vessels, hydraulics, pneumatics
  • Machine/electrical maintenance or monitoring
  • HVAC, machinist, steel fabrication, or engine repair

OR an equivalent combination of education and experience (one year of qualifying experience may substitute for one year of education).

Preferred Knowledge & Skills:

  • Familiarity with pressure-retaining equipment and mechanical systems
  • Working knowledge of alternative fuel systems and dispenser accuracy verification
  • Ability to read and apply codes and regulations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces or at heights
  • Capable of learning and applying complex mathematical formulas
