Now that you have started this next chapter in your life, we want your health and well-being to continue to Thrive. Even though you are retired, you can still participate in wellness activities, such as the recreation leagues, golf tournaments, and Dine and Discover presentations. Continue to utilize Thrive’s website to keep up with information, events, and toolkits. We will also keep you posted with information on volunteer opportunities as well as community centers that provide numerous activities.

AARP provides lots of retirement resources to help you start off on the right foot, retirement planning, and more. Check out their website for all kinds of information and tools.

Oklahoma Senior Journal

This online magazine provides a wide variety of information that aims to make a better life for the 50+ community. Robin Gunn, editor and publisher, also hosts a talk radio show on Freedom, 96.9.

Oklahoma Caregiver Coalition

The Oklahoma Caregiver Coalition (OKCares) is a collaboration of over 200 private and public partners who strive to improve the support and experiences of family caregivers through education, advocacy and access to resources by meeting quarterly to discuss pressing caregiver issues.

OKCares.org houses a wealth of information including a resource directory, support group locator, recordings of past statewide caregiver conferences, and contact information for statewide respite programs.

OKCares.org is a one-stop shop for family caregivers, whether caring for an infant, an older adult or anyone in between.

Oklahoma Healthy Aging Initiative

OHAI understands that having good health is a key to successful aging and promotes this credence through caregiver training and healthy aging education. The classes include fall prevention, diabetes management, caregiver support, among others.

MAPS 3 Senior Health and Wellness Centers

As a part of the MAPS 3 Project, these facilites were built so adults 50 years and older would have a center that promoted health and active lifestyles.

Another benefit is the social interaction as well as a variety classes from art, dance, and genealogy.

Travel Groups

This is a great option for people who love to travel. Traveling is great for keeping your brain activated and healthy.

OKLAHOMA RETIRED CITIZENS TRAVEL CLUB

Since 1968 Oklahoma Retired Citizens Travel Club (ORCTC) as formed as a non-profit, educational organization whose purpose is to provide its members with the benefits and pleasures of travel. In addition, information, and entertaining programs, primarily related to travel, are provided regularly scheduled ORCTC meetings.

Meetings are held on the first Saturday of each month.

Meeting location is Wickline United Methodist Church 417 Mid-America Blvd, Midwest City, OK 73110.

Social networking & trip signup is from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m., with the regular meeting starting at 10:30 a.m. Cost is $25 per year to join.
 

PUTNAM CITY RETIREES TRAVEL CLUB

The Putnam City Retirees Travel Club is dedicated to sharing amazing travel experiences for seniors from Oklahoma City and central Oklahoma. This non-profit group conducts guided group tours for Oklahomans 50 and older.

They offer day trips, interstate tours, and overseas vacation packages. They invite you to drop by a meeting and meet fun-loving Oklahoma City senior travelers.

They meet the first Thursday of each month, except December from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Will Rogers Exhibition Center 3400 N.W. 36th Street.

The Will Rogers Exhibition Center is in the North East area of Will Rogers Gardens and has plenty of parking.

You can find their Facebook group but you have to join in order to view information. Membership is $10 per person for the year and you must be at least 50 to join.

OKC Area Volunteering

According to Mayo Clinic, there is research that shows volunteering offers many health benefits, including physical and mental health, providing a sense of purpose, and opportunities to learn new skills.

A Keep America Beautiful Affiliate. If you love nature and would like to volunteer cleaning up parks around the metro area, this is the organization for you.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF OKLAHOMA

If you would enjoy mentoring a youth, please consider being a mentor for BBBS of Oklahoma. You can help provide structure for a child who may not have that, and it will help you keep up a schedule! 

METROPOLITAN LIBRARY VOLUNTEER

If you enjoy books and education, consider volunteering at your local library. You can read to children, assist with programs and events, and provide support in library departments and special collections.

STEVENSON CANCER CENTER

If you or someone you know has been affected by cancer, then consider volunteering at the Stevenson Cancer Center where you can serve patients through a wide range of tasks. Assist staff at the greeter desk, escort patients to appointments, take and deliver lunch orders to infusion patients, represent the cancer center at special events, and perform general office duties.

REGIONAL FOOD BANK OF OKLAHOMA

A food bank is always a great volunteer option because the times are flexible and readily available.

OKC ANIMAL WELFARE

If you love animals, volunteering with an animal shelter is perfect. Volunteers here can be expected to walk dogs, socialize with cats, and help organize offsite adoption events.

RETIRED SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

If you’re not sure exactly what you want to do but know you would like to volunteer, RSVP can help connect you with volunteer opportunities in your own community.

ASCENSION / ST. JOHN HEALTH SYSTEM

St. John Health System has many hospitals and clinics around the country. Volunteering at a hospital near you will not only be rewarding but also convenient.
