Inflatable Amusement Ride Safety: What You Need to Know

Monday, March 31, 2025
Inflatable Safety PSA - 1

If it doesn’t have this sticker, it shouldn’t be in use. Every inflatable amusement device operating in Oklahoma must display a current inspection sticker issued by the Oklahoma Department of Labor.

As the weather warms up, bounce houses and inflatable slides start popping up at birthday parties, school carnivals, neighborhood block parties, and local festivals. While these attractions are a favorite for kids, the Oklahoma Department of Labor wants to make sure families and event organizers know that inflatable amusement rides are regulated by state law, and that safety should always come first.

In Oklahoma, commercial inflatable devices—including bounce houses, inflatable slides, obstacle courses, and interactive games—must be registered, inspected annually by ODOL, and carry liability insurance. These requirements are in place to protect the public and ensure inflatables are operated safely, especially given the risks posed by Oklahoma’s unpredictable weather and strong winds.

How to Know if an Inflatable is Safe

The easiest way to tell if an inflatable ride is operating legally is to look for the ODOL inspection sticker. This sticker is issued after an inflatable has been inspected by one of our certified amusement ride inspectors. It indicates that the ride has been evaluated for safety features like proper anchoring, secure blower equipment, working electrical connections, and clear operational signage.

If there’s no sticker, that’s a red flag. You don’t have to be an expert to spot potential issues. If something feels off—if the inflatable isn’t secured, there’s no adult supervision, or it just doesn’t look right—it’s worth asking questions.

What Parents and Event Hosts Can Do

If you're renting an inflatable ride or hosting an event, ask the operator to show you proof of ODOL registration and inspection. You can also verify the registration status of any amusement ride company directly at oklahoma.gov/labor.

Choosing an ODOL-inspected inflatable isn’t just the responsible choice—it’s also the law. Rides that are not inspected and registered may not be properly anchored or maintained, and in the event of an accident, the operator’s insurance may not be valid. This creates a risk not only for the public, but for the event organizers and property owners as well.

Report Unsafe or Unregistered Rides

If you see an inflatable being used without an inspection sticker, appears unsafe, or lacks supervision, you can report it to ODOL. Complaints can be filed:

Every report helps us make sure inflatables across Oklahoma are operating safely and in compliance with state regulations.

Safe Fun Starts Here

At the Oklahoma Department of Labor, we believe fun and safety go hand in hand. If you're planning an event or taking your child to one, take a moment to check for the ODOL inspection sticker. That small sticker represents a full safety inspection—and it’s your best assurance that the inflatable your child is playing on has been properly maintained and is safe to use.
