Oklahoma Department of Labor Ensures Amusement Ride Safety at the Oklahoma State Fair

Oklahoma City, OK — As the Oklahoma City State Fair approaches, the Oklahoma Department of Labor (ODOL) is once again emphasizing its commitment to ensuring the safety of amusement rides. With the excitement of the fair just around the corner, ODOL is prepared to provide thorough inspections and ongoing oversight to guarantee a secure experience for all attendees.

"Oklahomans eagerly anticipate the arrival of the State Fair, and we share their excitement," says Commissioner Leslie Osborn. "As one of the 30 states that regulate amusement rides, we take our responsibility seriously. Our Amusement Ride Safety Inspectors will be on-site well before the fair begins to thoroughly inspect each ride and attraction, ensuring they meet all required standards. We will continue to monitor rides throughout the fair to ensure ongoing safety."

In preparation for the fair, each amusement ride must be issued a Certificate of Inspection by ODOL. Inspectors arrive days in advance to oversee the construction of the rides, ensuring they adhere to manufacturer specifications. Each ride is meticulously inspected before it opens to the public, and inspectors remain on-site throughout the fair to monitor operations.

"We are committed to safeguarding the enjoyment of Oklahomans as they experience the fair's attractions," Commissioner Osborn stated. "Our goal is to create a safe and enjoyable environment, and we view our role as a partnership with the industry to promote rider safety. When you see the ODOL inspection tag, you can be confident that the ride has been thoroughly vetted and is safe to enjoy."

Commissioner Osborn also underscores the importance of adhering to safety guidelines to prevent accidents. "A fun day at an amusement park or fair can quickly become distressing if safety procedures are not followed. We urge parents and children to familiarize themselves with the rules designed to ensure safety and to be aware of warning signs for potentially unsafe rides. Everyone must follow all posted instructions and guidelines."

To ensure a safe experience, the public should adhere to age, height, weight, and health restrictions for each ride. Following all signage and instructions from ride operators or recorded messages is crucial. Parents are encouraged to ensure their children understand and follow safety rules. If a child does not meet the specified requirements for a ride or cannot follow the safety rules, they should not be permitted to board.
