Oklahoma Charter School Hall of Fame To Honor Pioneers, Legacy Builders
The Oklahoma Statewide Charter School Board (SCSB) today announced the establishment of the Oklahoma Charter School Hall of Fame, a new honor created to recognize individuals whose vision, courage, leadership and lasting contributions have helped establish, strengthen, protect or advance public charter education in Oklahoma.
Nominations for the inaugural class are now being accepted through September 15, and nomination requirements are posted on the Statewide Charter School Board’s website: Hall of Fame
Unlike an annual performance award, the Oklahoma Charter School Hall of Fame is intended as a legacy honor, recognizing individuals whose contributions have had exceptional and enduring significance for Oklahoma charter schools, the students and families they serve, or the public policies and institutions that have made charter education possible which, as of this school year, serves one in 10 Oklahoma public school students and might higher percentages in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
“That growth did not happen by accident,” said Dr. Rebecca Wilkinson, SCSB executive director. “It rests on the work of people who had the vision to imagine something different, the courage to champion it when charter schools were new or controversial, and the persistence to turn an idea into opportunities that now affect tens of thousands of Oklahoma children. It is important that we preserve that history and honor the people who made it possible and, going forward, who will continue to make it possible.”
For inaugural inductees, nominations are especially encouraged for individuals who played pivotal roles in the creation, passage, implementation or defense of the Oklahoma Charter Schools Act in 1999, as well as the founders, educators and community leaders who transformed the law into functioning public schools for Oklahoma students.
Eligible nominees may include charter school founders, educators, administrators and governing-board leaders; elected officials and policymakers; and others whose work produced an exceptional and lasting impact on Oklahoma charter education. Nominees may be living or deceased, and individuals do not have to have worked directly for a charter school to be considered. Self-nominations are not accepted.
Wilkinson indicated the Statewide Charter School Board will coordinate the Hall of Fame but will not select inductees.
“Inductees will be chosen by an independent committee of stakeholders and leaders who can evaluate nominations on their merits and consider the full breadth of contributions that have shaped Oklahoma charter education,” she said. “That independence is important to establishing the credibility and lasting significance we want this Hall of Fame to have.”
Honorees and their nominators will be notified in early October. The inaugural Oklahoma Charter School Hall of Fame inductees will be announced and recognized during Momentum: The Annual Oklahoma Charter Schools Conference, which will be held November 4-5, 2026 in Norman and which more than 500 are expected to attend.
