Free training on Sept. 12 offered to individuals wanting to form
new charter schools in Oklahoma

The Statewide Charter School Board (SCSB) will conduct training on September 12 in Oklahoma City for individuals or groups interested in forming a charter school in Oklahoma.

Charter schools are accredited, public schools that operate independent of traditional local school districts and receive state and federal funding. They have innovative approaches to teaching and learning and are exempt of some of the regulations on traditional school districts.

State law (Title 70 Section 3-134) requires individuals seeking to establish a charter school or virtual charter school to complete training offered by the SCSB prior to establishment of the school and applying to any Oklahoma charter school authorizer for sponsorship of the school, such as the SCSB, a local school district, tribal organizations and higher education entities.

There is no fee to attend the Sept. 12 training, which will focus on the process and requirements for establishing a charter school or virtual charter school. It is the only training for the remainder of 2024 offered by the SCSB for those interested in forming a charter school.

Individuals or groups who want to attend the training must register in advance. Click here to email Dr. Jaycie Smith, SCSB Academic Compliance Officer, or call (405) 522-8873.
