Educational Audits

OSBOE has introduced an educational audit program.  This program is intended to assist with improvement of physician clinical operations through review of medical office records and practices.

Please note: This process is not intended to be punitive, but a joint effort between OSBOE and the physician to ensure they have knowledge of current best practice standards and practice statutes to avoid potential violations.

Osteopathic physicians may receive a communication from Director of Educational Audits, Kristi Johnson to begin the audit process.

The following shows what may be included in an audit.  This list is not exhaustive and each audit is different. Note: If the physician has a dispensing permit, an audit for dispensing practices could be completed at the same time.

  • Initial contact and a 1-2 hour appointment is set with the physician by auditor;
  • 10-14 patients are randomly pulled from the physician's PMP;
  • Auditor visits with the physician and utilizes the below checklists to discuss any necessary statute, rule, and policy. This initial visit could also include a tour of the facility;
  • Medical Records for the selected patients are requested and provided to auditor;
  • Records are reviewed and a report is compiled; and
  • Report is provided to the physician.  This report will include any recommendations or follow-ups needed.

Clarifies Regulatory Requirements: Auditor provides the physician and staff with information on statute, rules, and policy specific to prescribing and practice standards.

Customized Policy Development: Auditor can assist in drafting or updating policies and procedures to ensure they meet regulatory standards.

Point of Contact: Auditor becomes a resource for physician questions and clarification.

Early Issue Identification: Small areas of concern are caught and can be corrected before they become a potential disciplinary or liability issue.
