WARNING: Providing Drugs to Patients

The Pharmacy Board has contacted our office and warned us that they are seeing an increasing problem with Physicians dispensing drugs to their patients improperly. This is an area of increased enforcement emphasis.

For example, some physicians are ordering peptides, or other drugs, online from unapproved manufacturers or suppliers, then giving them to patients.

Remember, drugs dispensed by physicians must only be obtained from companies that are licensed in Oklahoma by the Pharmacy Board. Ordering from an unlicensed company is a violation of both the Pharmacy Boards Act and the Osteopathic Board Act. Any entity shipping drug products into Oklahoma is required to hold a license with the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy. Please ensure that you verify licensure before purchasing any drug products. There is a quick and easy license lookup page on the Oklahoma Board of Pharmacy’s website. Having licensure with the Oklahoma Board of Pharmacy ensures home-state licenses, FDA registrations, and current inspections have been verified. This is important to properly ensure patient safety.

59 OK Stat § 353.1 defines "dispensing" to include the delivery of a drug or device to a patient. Dispense includes sell, distribute, leave with, give away, dispose of, deliver or supply;

59 OK Stat § 355.1 – requires that when you dispense any drug, other than a sample, a physician is required to be dispensed in an appropriate container to which a label has been affixed. Such label shall include the name and office address of the licensed practitioner, date dispensed, name of patient, directions for administration, prescription number, the trade or generic name and the quantity and strength. The licensed practitioner shall keep a suitable book, file or record in which shall be preserved for a period of not less than five (5) years a record of every drug compounded or dispensed by the licensed practitioner.

Oklahoma law also requires that a D.O. who dispenses drugs in their practice must register annually with the appropriate licensing board as a dispenser and obtain a permit from their licensing board.

What this means for you:

Do not order peptides or medications from unlicensed vendors.
Verify all suppliers through the Oklahoma Board of Pharmacy before placing an order.
Improper dispensing could lead to potential disciplinary action on your license.
You are legally responsible for anything you dispense to a patient.

Renewals: May 1 - June 30

OSBOE would like to remind you that renewals begin May 1. All Osteopathic Licenses in Oklahoma expire on June 30 of each year. Before you begin your renewal, please have all needed CME entered in CE Broker. The link to access the renewal system is below.

Dispensing Permits are requested outside of the renewal. For those physicians that dispense and log medication, Dispensing Permit requests will be a separate application.
Please ensure all Supervision entries in your profile are accurate and up to date.

CME and CE Broker

CME Requirements:

A minimum of sixteen (16) Category 1 American Osteopathic Association (AOA) hours are required. If American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Board Certification is held, AOA hours can be substituted with Category 1 American Medical Association (AMA) hours.

If you hold an Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics (OBN) or Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration, one (1) of the sixteen (16) hours must be on the topic of Proper Prescribing at a course previously approved by the Board. If you do not, you are exempt from this requirement and will need to obtain the standard Category 1 credits for all required hours.

If at any time during the CME Cycle of July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026, you were a Resident or Fellow you are exempt from CME requirements this cycle.

To report one of the exemptions above (i.e. Resident/Fellows and Out of State Licensees) select “Additional Options” in your CE Broker Dashboard.

CE Broker:

CE Broker is the official CME tracking software used by OSBOE. If the required number of annual CME hours have not been entered or recorded, the licensure system will not permit your renewal until those credits are completed and entered in your CE Broker account.
