Physician Assistant & Physician Advisory

On January 27, 2026, the Oklahoma Medical Board issued the below advisory:

Physician assistants licensed in the state of Oklahoma who are prescribing Schedule II controlled dangerous substances must be supervised by a physician.

Physician assistants practicing under a practice agreement may prescribe controlled medications in Schedules II through V. 59 O.S. § 519.6 (E). If the physician assistant practicing under the supervision of a delegating physician plans to prescribe Schedule II controlled dangerous substances, an updated practice agreement (Form 5) must be submitted to the Oklahoma Medical Board.

If a physician assistant prescribes Schedule II controlled dangerous substances, a Form 5 submitted prior to August 29, 2025, is invalid and the physician assistant and delegating physician are noncompliant with the updated law. The current practice agreement is located here.

Both the physician assistant and the Medical Doctor will be disciplined by the Oklahoma Medical Board for prescribing Schedule II controlled dangerous substances without a current practice agreement on file with the Oklahoma Medical Board.

The Oklahoma Medical Board website has a list here which displays those Physician Assistants who are in compliance and have Schedule II prescriptive authority. Schedule II prescriptive authority is specifically linked to the practice address of the physician assistant. If the physician assistant has prescriptive authority at multiple practice locations, each location must be submitted to the Oklahoma Medical Board by completing the practice agreement (Form 5). The list is updated nightly.

On-Demand Proper Prescribing Course

OSBOE recently approved an on-demand proper prescribing course developed by the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association (OOA) following the Board’s updated policy allowing such courses when they meet established criteria.

This course satisfies the annual one-hour CME requirement in pain management, opioid use, or addiction for physicians who hold an Oklahoma DEA and OBNDD registration.

The OOA will report course completion to CE Broker on the physician’s behalf.

To learn more or register, contact the OOA at (405) 528-4848 or click here.

Medicare Telehealth Policies Extended

An omnibus bill that ended the four-day government shutdown included an extension of Medicare telehealth flexibilities through December 31, 2027.  These telehealth policies allow:

  • There are no geographic restrictions for originating site for Medicare non-behavioral/mental telehealth services through December 31, 2027.
  • Telehealth services can be provided by all eligible Medicare providers through December 31, 2027.
  • Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and Rural Health Clinics (RHCs) can serve as Medicare distant site providers for non-behavioral/mental telehealth services through December 31, 2027.
  • An in-person visit within six months of an initial Medicare behavioral/mental telehealth service, and annually thereafter, is not required through December 31, 2027.
  • Non-behavioral/mental telehealth services in Medicare can be delivered using audio-only communication platforms through December 31, 2027. Interactive telecommunications system may also permanently include two-way, real-time audio-only communication technology for any telehealth service furnished to a patient in their home if the distant site physician or practitioner is technically capable of using an interactive telecommunications system, but the patient is not capable of, or does not consent to, the use of video technology.

Lorna Breen Heroes' Foundation

OSBOE recently earned the Wellbeing First Champion badge from the Lorna Breen Heroes' Foundation.

This signifies a commitment to supporting access to mental health care for the physician work force - removing intrusive, stigmatizing questions from licensing and renewal applications.

Health care workers deserve the right to pursue mental health care confidentially. Removing these mental health questions in OSBOE's applications for licensure and renewal brings OSBOE one step closer in changing the culture in healthcare and ensuring physicians know their mental health and wellbeing is a priority.
