PRSS Specialty Tracks

Individuals who are Certified under the Peer Recovery Support Services (PRSS) Program can attend ongoing supplemental trainings that focus on specializations in the Behavioral Health field. These trainings give Peers specific education on Recovery modalities, Substance Use Disorders, and other evidence based practices that will give them the tools to better serve Oklahoma's communities. Below is a list of current PRSS Specialty Tracks provided by ODMHSAS Peer Division.

PRSS Ethics

Format: Virtual • Duration: 2 Hours

Training and class discussion on the ethical and practical standards for Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialists as related to the Oklahoma Code of Ethics and the SAMHSA Ethical Standards and Practices for Peer Recovery Support Specialists.

PRSS Group Facilitation Skills

Format: Virtual • Duration: 3 Hours

Facilitating educational and support groups is a vital service that Peer Recovery Support Specialists provide. It’s important to have base level knowledge and skills on peer group facilitation, which this training provides. Enroll in this training to learn skills and tips as a Peer Recovery Support Specialists on facilitating educational and support groups.  

PRSS Methamphetamine

Methamphetamine use in the United States and in Oklahoma is a huge problem, and significantly and negatively impacts Oklahomans across our state. This training provides information to help you better understand methamphetamine use in order to better serve your clients that have been impacted by methamphetamine addiction.

PRSS Domestic Violence 101

Format: Virtual • Duration: 2 Hours

The focus of this training is supporting peers in developing a deeper understanding of domestic violence, with an emphasis on coercive control. Participants will learn about signs and red flags of domestic violence and common coercive control dynamics. Participants will gain an understanding of the intersections of domestic violence; substance use and mental illness. The dynamics of substance use coercion and mental health coercion will be discussed as well as strategies to support survivors in the role of a peer.

PRSS Domestic Violence 201

Format: Virtual • Duration: 4 Hours

One must attend PRSS-Domestic Violence 101 prior to enrollment in PRSS-Domestic Violence 201 

This training builds on the information presented in the DV Training for Peers 101 session. Participants will review domestic violence risk factors and will develop skills to engage in safety planning with victims/survivors of domestic violence. The training will also discuss considerations related to peer safety in this work. Dos and don'ts for peers in domestic violence work will be explored, considering boundaries, culturally responsive support, recovery frameworks, working with those who use violence, and the role of support for peers while doing this work. 

PRSS Veterans

Format: Virtual • Duration: 6 Hours

PRSS - Veteran's training is an opportunity for both veteran & non-Veteran Peer Recovery Support Specialists to enhance their skills in order to better connect with and serve Veteran's in Oklahoma. This training will focus on issues specific to veterans' lived experiences and give a greater understanding of the culture that is shared with members of the armed forces. Bryan Rich, US Army / OIF Veteran, Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist brings information from programs he has completed as well as his own lived experience to provide an opportunity to learn and connect with other PRSS' around the state of Oklahoma.

PRSS Latinx Culture & Recovery

Format: Virtual • Duration: 3 Hours

The PRSS Latinx supplemental track is aimed to help Peers facilitate effective Peer Support Services w/ Latinx communities in Oklahoma through specific training on Hispanic/Latinx Terminology (Language), Cultural Values & Diversity. This training centers around the Stigma, Barriers and Cultural views of Latinx communities and what Peers can do to help alleviate some of the stressors experienced by Latinx populations when seeking help for a substance use disorder and/or Mental Health Issues.

PRSS Gambling

Format: Virtual • Duration: 3 Hours

This training provides a Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist with the following: basic knowledge of pathological gambling, the history of gambling, progression of the problem gambler and problem gambling’s impact on society. This knowledge and information will help the peer better understand and provide services to those impacted by problem gambling.

PRSS Older Adults

Format: Virtual • Duration: 6 Hours

PRSS-O is a 1-day specialty training for certified PRSSs. This is a Specialty course that will prepare you to work with older adults. The training will focus on the normal aging process, cultural and environmental issues, chronic disease, medication, risks for developing behavioral health disorders, suicide, ageism and specific considerations you need to be aware of when working with and for older Oklahomans. It is designed for certified PRSSs who work with older adults or are interested in working with that population.

PRSS Crisis

Format: Virtual • Duration: 10 Hours (2 day training)
Available CEUs: 10 PRSS

Peer support plays a vital role in crisis services. Crisis services can involve high acuity, therefore require a base of knowledge and skills in crisis care to prepare those providing services to be adequately equipped. This training is to supplement a C-PRSSs current knowledge, skills and training, as well as supplement the training provided by their provider agency. The learning objectives for the PRSS crisis track include the following: History of Crisis Response and Crisis Centers; What is a Crisis; 43A as it applies to Crisis Services; Crisis Care and Response; Levels of Care, and PRSS Roles, Responsibilities; and Professional Skills in Crisis Settings.

PRSS Supervisory Training

Format: Virtual • Duration: 4 Hours
Available CEUs: 4 PRSS, CM, LPC, LADC/MH, LMFT, LCSW, LBP

The Peer Recovery Support Services Supervision training provides participants with the core concepts and skills that will better support the peer workforce system wide. In terms of supervision, there are many challenges for both the supervisor and the peer specialist. This required training for all those that supervise Peer Recovery Support Specialists provides an overview on the peer role and competencies, best practices on supervision of peers as well as supervision best practices for any role, ways to implement peer support effectively, and how to navigate difficult situations that may arise. Therefore, the training seeks to help participants: 

  1. Learn quality supervisory skills 
  2. Understand and support the role of the Peer Recovery Support Specialist 
  3. Promote recovery in their supervisory roles
  4. Advocate for peer support services across the organization and in the community 
  5. Assist with professional and personal growth of the Peer Recovery Support Specialist 

Tobacco Free Support Group Facilitation

Format: Virtual • Duration: 6 Hours
Available CEUs: 6 PRSS & Wellness Coach
Cost: Free

The Tobacco Free Advanced Techniques is a specialized training for interdisciplinary providers that provides attendees with the information and skills they need to successfully assist consumers to live tobacco-free. Providers will learn about the latest information about tobacco, tobacco addiction and cessation strategies. In addition, training participants will learn how to facilitate tobacco-free support groups and successfully refer consumers to the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline. 

PRSS Youth

Format: Virtual • Duration: 6 Hours
Available CEUs: 6 PRSS
Cost: Free

A short supplemental training designed to equip certified Peer Recovery Support Specialists with strategies and knowledge useful in working with transition-age young people ages 16-25.
