Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Monday, September 30, 2024

We are proud to join the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy in recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), an annual campaign held each October to raise awareness about disability employment issues and celebrate the many contributions of America's workers with disabilities.

NDEAM’s roots date back to 1945 when it was first observed as a week focused primarily on people with physical disabilities. Over time, the campaign expanded to a full month, evolving its name and scope to recognize the vital importance of including individuals with all types of disabilities in the workforce.

NDEAM reminds us that America’s workers with disabilities make significant contributions to businesses, communities, and the broader economy. Their inclusion is essential for building a stronger, more diverse, and more equitable workplace. As we celebrate the history and evolution of this awareness month, it’s an opportunity for all employers and industries to reflect on the importance of accessible, inclusive hiring practices that embrace the talents and skills of people with disabilities.

How Employers and Employees Can Participate

Employers and employees from all sectors are encouraged to participate in National Disability Employment Awareness Month and to take steps to promote its messages—not just in October, but year-round. Here are some ways you can get involved:

  • Host an event: Organize disability employment awareness activities in your workplace or community to start important conversations about accessibility and inclusion.
  • Educate your team: Use this month as an opportunity to educate employees and management on the value of a diverse workforce and the specific contributions of workers with disabilities.
  • Review workplace policies: Take time to ensure your company's hiring practices and workplace policies are inclusive of individuals with disabilities.
  • Promote inclusive hiring: Actively encourage the inclusion of qualified workers with disabilities by adjusting job descriptions, offering accommodations, and creating an environment that supports all employees.

For more information on how you can participate in National Disability Employment Awareness Month and promote inclusion in your workplace, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s NDEAM page.

Together, we can continue to build workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to succeed, including individuals with disabilities.
