Product Description: Go.USA.gov is a URL shortener that lets anyone with a government e-mail address create short, trustworthy .gov website addresses (URLs) to use on online services with character-limit restrictions. This service only shortens government URLs – that is: .mil, .gov, .fed.us, and .si.edu URLs. Go.USA.gov also tracks the number of clicks each shortened URL receives, allowing users to measure the impact of their outreach.

Key Functionality: Only agencies with a verifiable U.S. federal, state, or local government e-mail address may register for a Go.USA.gov account to create shortened URLs (website addresses). The service only shortens government URLs - .mil, .gov, .fed.us and .si.edu URLs. Go.USA.gov also tracks the number of clicks each shortened URL receives. New features added (February 2014)

  • Because of an increase in spamming using .gov URLs (link opens in a new window) allegedly related to the collaboration between USA.gov and bitly to generate shortened .gov URLs, the Office of Management and Enterprise Services (OMES) Information Services (IS) is discouraging agencies from using bitly for shortened URL creation (Added: 10/22/2012)
