About Deferred Maintenance

Deferred maintenance refers to the practice of postponing maintenance activities, such as repairs and upkeep, on assets like infrastructure or machinery. This delay is often due to budget constraints, lack of resources or other priorities.

While it might save costs in the short term, deferred maintenance can lead to asset deterioration, higher repair costs in the future, and potential safety issues. The facilities team has kept the state running well past the usable life of some of the assets listed on the deferred maintenance 8-year plan.

The past usable life issue has created a reactionary environment that puts the state at risk of assets failing and causing a delay or stoppage in operations.  The assets were ranked and listed by criticality and priority as defined on the eight-year plan.
