Save for Emergencies

Wednesday, May 22, 2024

Summary

Emergency financial preparation is key to a well-rounded preparedness plan. If a disaster wipes out electonic payment methods, do you have cash on hand? Do you have your financial records and institution information stored in a safe, accessible place?

This 9-post toolkit was released as part of the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management's yearlong 12 Ways to Prepare social media campaign in 2024. This campaign aimed to meet residents where they were at with informational action items, encouraging them to be #ReadyOK while equipping them to that end. March's focus was Save for Emergencies, which encouraged residents to practice preparedness-focused money methods and equipped them to ensure their insurance coverage was complete.

3. Running Wild

Take control 🤠 These are your dollars. Know where they're going! You have the power to give yourself some padding for the unforeseen.

Research budgeting methods to find which one works best for your family, and implement it! A general rule of thumb is to save 3 to 6 months of living expenses in a savings account that can be accessed in any crisis 💸

4. Emergency Financial First Aid Kit

EFFAK! It’s not an expletive. It’s one of the many acronyms we, in government, adore 😇

FEMA’s Emergency Financial First Aid Kit is a top-notch tool you can use to get your finances in order and prepped for an emergency. Gather up your documents and work through this packet one page at a time. When you’re done, keep it in a safe place. It may take a while, but it will be worth it to have what you need at your fingertips if disaster strikes.

5. Keep Cash in a Safe Place

When disaster strikes, you may feel like you're living in the wild west.

🔴 Keep emergency cash in small bills at home in a safe place, such as your fireproof and waterproof safe.

❗It is important to have small bills on hand because ATMs and credit cards may not work during a disaster when you need to purchase necessary supplies.
