National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Since 2004, the president of the United States and Congress have declared October to be National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a time dedicated for the public and private sectors to work together to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity.
Over the years, it has grown into a collaborative effort between government and industry to enhance cybersecurity awareness, encourage actions by the public to reduce online risk and generate discussion on cyber threats on a national and global scale.
The federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recently announced the theme for this year is Securing the Next 250, which highlights the importance of protecting the country, economy and communities as cyber threats continue to evolve.
Cyber threats are getting faster and smarter. New and evolving technologies, including artificial intelligence, are accelerating the rate at which hackers can identify and exploit vulnerabilities in computer software and systems. Everyone can help fight back by taking four core cybersecurity steps:
- Use strong passwords and a password manager.
- Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA).
- Recognize and report scams.
- Update software.
Organizations of all sizes can take additional steps to strengthen their cybersecurity and protect their systems and data. For those who own or operate critical infrastructure, CISA encourages organizations to practice the 3Rs of cybersecurity:
- Reduce vulnerabilities.
- Replace end-of-support devices.
- Recover quickly to sustain operations.

Oklahoma participates in Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026
On Sept. 10, 2026, Gov. J. Kevin Stitt proclaimed October 2026 as Cybersecurity Awareness Month in Oklahoma.
The governor’s proclamation highlights the critical importance of online safety. It serves as a reminder that protecting personal data and securing the state's digital infrastructure is a shared responsibility, especially at a time when bad actors are using artificial intelligence to advance threat tactics.
