The Oklahoma State Archives provides access to historical government records, manuscripts, photographs, maps, and other primary sources documenting Oklahoma’s history. Researchers are encouraged to begin by reviewing online finding aids and digital collections to identify relevant materials.

In-person research is available at the State Archives, where staff can assist with locating collections, understanding access guidelines, and handling materials properly. All research materials require advance notice. Please contact the State Archives at least two weeks before your visit so that requested materials can be retrieved prior to your arrival. Research may be conducted during regular business hours, excluding state holidays.

Many items from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries’ archives are available online through the Oklahoma State Digital Archives. These digital collections include historic postcards, photographs, publications, and government records dating back to Oklahoma’s territorial days.

Materials in the Oklahoma State Digital Archives are freely available online and do not require a library card. Visit the Oklahoma State Digital Archives at digitalprairie.ok.gov to explore available collections.

The Oklahoma State Digital Archives contains digitized Oklahoma state government records created by state agencies, boards, commissions, and elected officials. These collections document Oklahoma’s history from territorial days to the present.

Digital collections include government publications and records, historic photographs and postcards, legal and legislative materials, and special topic collections. Examples include Territorial Records, Oklahoma Governors, Oklahoma Register, Oklahoma Postcards, Women’s Suffrage, Tulsa Race Massacre, Confederate Pension Records, the Ada Lois Sipuel Case Files, and more.

Library cards from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries are available to current Oklahoma state government employees and state elected officials.

The Oklahoma Department of Libraries serves as the library for Oklahoma state government. However, many ODL materials may still be available to the public through Interlibrary Loan. Individuals can request ODL materials through their local public library, which will coordinate the loan on their behalf.

If you are not a state employee or state elected official, you can access books, digital resources, and services through one of Oklahoma’s 200+ public libraries and 8 public library systems.

If you are a state agency employee or elected official and have an Oklahoma Department of Libraries card, please email StateLibrary@libraries.ok.gov or call (405) 522-3505 to inquire about your account.

ODL library cards expire annually. If your card has expired or your information needs to be updated, please complete the Library Card Application form so we can update your records. If you have questions while completing the form, you may email StateLibrary@libraries.ok.gov.

The Oklahoma Department of Libraries serves state employees and elected officials only. If you have a library card with a public library or library system—including one of Oklahoma’s 200+ public libraries and 8 public library systems—please contact your local library directly, as each manages its own accounts. To locate your public library or library system, visit oklahoma.gov/libraries/find.

You do not need an Oklahoma Department of Libraries library card to use ODL’s digital resources.

All resources are linked through the Oklahoma Department of Libraries website. However, some services—such as Brainfuse and EBSCO—are provided in partnership with public libraries. When accessing these resources, we recommend using your local public library’s website, where you may be asked to sign in with your public library card.
