Preceptor Tax Credit Program

Pursuant to Oklahoma Statute Title 68, Revenue and Taxation §68-2357.409, the Oklahoma Health Care Workforce Training Commission (HWTC) administers a state income tax credit program to encourage Oklahoma-licensed health care professionals to serve as preceptors for students and trainees preparing to enter the health care workforce.
This program recognizes the vital role preceptors play in training the next generation of health care professionals and expanding access to care across Oklahoma.

Eligible Applicants

HWTC will accept applications for tax credit consideration from individuals who meet all the following criteria:

  • Are licensed in the State of Oklahoma as one of the following:
    • Allopathic Physician (MD)
    • Osteopathic Physician (DO)
    • Physician Assistant (PA)
    • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
  • Provide primary care services in Oklahoma
  • Serve as a preceptor for eligible students or trainees during an approved preceptorship rotation

Who Is Qualified to be a Preceptee (Student/Trainee)

Eligible preceptors may supervise and train:

  • Medical students
  • Medical residents
  • Physician assistant students
  • Advanced practice registered nursing students

A preceptorship rotation is defined as a period of preceptorship training of one or more students or residents that, in aggregate, totals one hundred sixty (160) hours.

Tax Credit Amounts

Tax credits are awarded per completed preceptorship rotation, subject to annual limits.

Medical Students or Residents

  • First, second, or third rotation: $290 per rotation
  • Fourth through tenth rotation: $590 per rotation

Physician Assistant Students or APRN Students

  • First, second, or third rotation: $165 per rotation
  • Fourth through tenth rotation: $340 per rotation

Annual Limits

  • A tax credit may be claimed for no more than ten (10) preceptorship rotations per calendar year
  • HWTC will accept only one application per preceptorship rotation at a time
  • Tax credits are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to the availability of funds
  • Each rotation must meet the 160-hour minimum requirement
  • Credits are subject to review, verification, and approval by HWTC prior to submission to the Oklahoma Tax Commission
