OKLAHOMA CITY – The Office of Management and Enterprise Services (OMES), in partnership with Gov. Kevin Stitt and the Oklahoma Division of Government Efficiency (DOGE-OK), has introduced new automated lawn mowers to service the State Capitol grounds. This innovative approach is better for the soil and will reduce costs, reinforcing the state’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and sustainability.
OMES recently purchased seven automated mowers for $24,000 to maintain approximately one acre around the Capitol grounds. These “Auto Mows” replace traditional contracted landscaping services. In the past, contractors would submit bids to the state totaling between $350,000 and $600,000 annually. By investing in this technology, Oklahoma is significantly cutting maintenance expenses while continuing to upkeep the grounds.
“This is a smart, efficient use of taxpayer dollars,” Gov. Stitt said. “We are always looking for ways to reduce spending while maintaining top-tier services. By embracing automation, we’re saving hundreds of thousands of dollars each year and setting an example for how government can operate more efficiently.”
Beyond cost savings, the automated mowers offer several key benefits. They naturally manage weeds in the grass without requiring herbicides or pesticides. Additionally, each mower is equipped with GPS tracking and built-in alarms to ensure security. For added safety, the mowers automatically shut off their blades if lifted.
“We are committed to adopting technology that improves efficiency and delivers the best value for Oklahomans,” said Bonnie Campo, director of OMES Outreach. “These mowers align with our mission to make government operations smarter and more sustainable.”
OMES is exploring opportunities to expand this initiative to other state properties in the future, further optimizing costs and environmental impact across Oklahoma.
