HB 2298 and Independent Prescriptive Authority
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN-CNP, APRN-CNS, APRN-CNM)
With the passage of HB 2298, effective Saturday, November 1, 2025, eligible Advanced Practice Registered Nurses meeting the requirements enumerated in the bill are eligible to apply for independent prescriptive authority recognition.
With the approval of emergency rules by the governor, with an effective date of November 1, 2025, OBN began accepting applications at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2025. If you currently have prescriptive authority recognition, you must maintain a supervising physician until you have applied for and been granted independent prescriptive authority.
In addition, All APRNs are encouraged to review the requirements imposed by HB 2298 and the resulting amendments to the Nursing Practice Act, 59 O.S. § 567.1, et seq., to ensure their continued compliance with the legal requirements of the Act. New requirements created by HB 2298 include those governing independent prescriptive authority and malpractice insurance, among others.
