Extended Access for REAL ID

A big thank you to everyone who helped make the recent Backpacks & Boarding Passes event a success. These expanded hours at select locations from Aug. 11–16 enabled us to provide evening and weekend appointments for driver license, REAL ID, written test and drive test services. This extra access helped Oklahomans prepare for back-to-school and fall travel by offering more flexible options outside the standard workday.

REAL ID is a federal security credential added to State-Issued Driver Licenses and Identification Cards that establishes a minimum security standard required for specific activities.

Beginning May 7, 2025, a REAL ID License or Identification card, or valid federal identification document (i.e. U.S. Passport) will be required to board a domestic flight, visit military bases or specific federal buildings or enter nuclear power plants.

The REAL ID is marked by a gold star in the upper-right hand corner. This credential meets the new federal security standards and may be used to board domestic flights, as well as to enter military bases, secure federal facilities and nuclear power plants after the May 7, 2025 deadline.

A Standard Driver License will not have a gold star marked in the upper-right hand corner. It does not meet the new federal security standards, and cannot use to board domestic flights and will not allow you to enter military bases, secure federal facilities or nuclear power plants after the May 7, 2025 deadline.

REAL IDs are optional. You do not need a REAL ID if you don't plan to fly domestically, enter federal buildings or visit military or nuclear facilities.

Yes, a valid U.S. Passport will still be required for international travel, regardless of whether you have a REAL ID.

Yes. You do not need a REAL ID to drive, vote or apply for or receive federal benefits to which you are entitled. You can still enter federal facilities that do not require IDs (like the post office). You will still have access to hospitals and other life saving services and you will be able to participate in law enforcement proceedings and investigations, such as serving on a jury or testifying.

Your REAL ID will typically arrive in the mail 10-14 days after your visit. You will be provided with a temporary paper copy to keep with you until it arrives.

Yes. The REAL ID is here to stay and customers will be able to upgrade whenever they like. The May 7 deadline is the cut off when Standard Driver Licenses won't be enough to board a plane domestically.
