Shape Your Future Encourages Healthier Halloween Habits for Oklahomans

Thursday, October 23, 2025

Halloween is just around the corner, and with it comes costumes, candy, class parties and excitement for kids and families across Oklahoma. This year, Shape Your Future, a program of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust  (TSET), reminds Oklahomans that celebrating doesn’t have to mean eating a spooky amount of sugar and sacrificing healthy habits.

“Treats are absolutely part of the holiday fun, but too much sugar can leave everyone feeling tired, cranky and even sick,” said Julie Bisbee, TSET executive director. “Finding fun and creative ways to enjoy the day without overloading on sugar can help people feel better while still supporting long-term health goals.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping children’s intake below 25 grams of sugar a day. On average, American children consume about 7,000 calories or 3 cups of sugar during the Halloween season. According to the American Heart Association, women should consume no more than 25 grams of sugar while men should consume no more than 36. Taking steps to reduce excess added sugar consumption for the whole family is key to a healthier holiday.

Shape Your Future's tricks for a healthier Halloween:

  • Eat a well-balanced dinner: Fuel up before the fun night! A healthy meal with veggies, fruit, lean proteins and whole grains will help keep everyone full and energized for the night.
  • Discuss limits ahead of time: Talk with your kids about how much candy they can enjoy and when. Encourage your kids to be mindful of the amount of candy and snacks they eat to prevent sugar overload.
  • Find the right bag: Keep portion sizes in mind and be sure your child’s trick-or-treat bag or bucket is appropriately sized. Smaller bags mean fewer sweets.
  • Make it a game: Play a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt while you walk around the block. This gets the whole family moving while searching for spooky decorations and cool costumes.

Families can use Halloween as an opportunity to start new traditions that blend movement and quality time. From a spooky evening walk or a dance party to a celebration with healthy, tasty treats for all.
