National Bike and Roll to School Day highlights the power of active routines
The Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) encourages Oklahoma families to make daily movement a priority as part of ongoing efforts to prevent childhood obesity and improve long-term health. With many children not getting the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day, simple habits like walking, biking or rolling to school can help improve overall health.
While seeing the state’s obesity numbers go down, Oklahoma still has one of the highest rates in the U.S., which can increase the risk for serious health problems like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Health experts say helping kids stay active is one of the most effective ways to support both physical and mental health.
“Kids do better when movement is part of their everyday life,” said Julie Bisbee, TSET’s executive director. “It doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple activities like walking to school or playing outside can help build healthy habits that last.”
National Bike and Roll to School Day, May 6, highlights how communities can support safe, active lifestyles. Events like this encourage families to consider walking, biking or rolling to school as a way to incorporate movement into daily life. Activities like walking, biking, scooting or playing outside can help meet the 60 minutes a day goal for children while also improving focus, energy and mood.
Families can support these efforts by choosing active options when possible, planning safe routes in their neighborhoods and encouraging kids to spend more time moving and less time on screens. Schools and communities also play an important role by creating safe, welcoming spaces for children to be active.
Through its Shape Your Future program, TSET provides practical tools and resources to help families add more movement to their routines and build healthier habits where they live, work and learn. These resources are designed to be simple, practical and easy to use for busy Oklahoma families.
By investing in prevention and community-based programs, TSET is working to improve health outcomes and create healthier communities across the state.
