FAQs

Welcome to our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page. Here, you'll find quick answers to the most common questions about the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

Under NEPA, ODOT is required to evaluate the environmental impacts of proposed actions for projects that are federally funded or approved work. Documentation for this requirement is created by the department and is subject to federal review and approval.

NEPA is triggered when a transportation project:

  • Uses federal funding (e.g., from FHWA, FTA, FRA),
  • Requires a federal permit or approval, or
  • Is located on federal land.

  • Wetlands, habitat, and water quality
  • Historic and cultural resources
  • Hazardous materials
  • Noise impacts

Yes.

ODOT invites the public to comment on its projects at public meetings and during comment periods. View the meeting schedule on the Public Meetings page, and email questions or submit your input to Engage@odot.ok.gov.

After an ODOT NEPA document is completed and approved for release, a copy can be requested via an open records request.

The Section 106 process begins early in the planning phase prior to public comment periods and/or meetings. If you're looking to provide input about a historic property or wish to become a consulting party in the Section 106 process, visit the Cultural Resource's Public & Consulting Parties page.
