AXON: Tactical Drone Operator
Description
The Tactical Drone Operator Course is an intensive, 2 day training designed to prepare personnel to safely, effectively, and legally operate unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) during law-enforcement operations. This course combines critical classroom instruction with practical, scenario-based flight exercises to ensure deputies develop the skills and decision-making required for real-world deployment. Participants will learn mission planning, and risk-management techniques specific to law-enforcement environments. Practical modules focus on tactical applications such as overwatch during high-risk operations, and building clearing. Operators will gain confidence in flight controls, payload management (camera, thermal, zoom), and communication protocols essential for working within a coordinated response team. By the end of the course, officers will be fully equipped with the foundational knowledge and hands-on skills needed to operate drones safely and tactically in support of law enforcement missions.
Core Topics Include: • Mission planning, airspace assessment, and operational risk management • Crew Resource Management (CRM) and communication protocols • Fundamentals of drone flight, system components, and emergency procedures • Tactical deployment strategies for patrol, investigations, and special operations • Overwatch, suspect tracking, search and rescue techniques, and evidence capture • Live-flight training scenarios with real-time instructor feedback; Learning Outcomes: Upon completion, participants will be able to:
• Conduct safe, compliant UAS operations in accordance with agency and federal guidelines • Deploy drones tactically to enhance situational awareness and officer safety • Execute basic and intermediate flight maneuvers under operational conditions • Utilize onboard sensors and payloads to support mission objectives • Document missions accurately and maintain operational continuity; Target Audience: Any peace officer seeking certification or proficiency in tactical drone operations; Equipment Recommendations: Drone with Prop Guards, At least 2-3 extra batteries, Ability to charge batteries simultaneously, Lights for drone, front facing and underneath; The DJI Avada 1, 2, and NEO are recommended. We will have DJI Avada 2 and NEO's available for the class if you are still working to get your drone fleet purchased.
