Minimum Requirements
• Be a United States citizen
• Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
• Possess a valid Oklahoma driver's license
• Have a high school diploma or GED
• Successfully complete or be able to complete the minimum training required for certification, including the C.L.E.E.T. Basic Academy and the Carter County Sheriff's Office Field Training Program
• Never have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude and not currently be under indictment for any criminal offense
• Have no previous convictions within the last ten (10) years or current charges of driving while intoxicated or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
• Never have been convicted of any crime involving domestic battery
• Not be prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle
• Not be prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition
• Successfully complete a thorough background investigation, personal interviews, and MMPI evaluation
• Never have had a commission or peace officer license denied by final order or revoked
• Have excellent report writing skills
• Be self-motivated and detail-oriented
• Have excellent de-escalation skills
• Demonstrate the ability to perform physical tasks under stressful and often confusing circumstances
 

Key Responsibilities

Sheriff's patrol deputies are responsible for enforcing state and local laws, providing 24/7 law enforcement services in unincorporated areas of Carter County, responding to emergency calls, conducting investigations, serving civil process, and maintaining public safety.
• Responding to emergency calls for service
• Apprehending criminal offenders
• Providing mutual aid and assistance to other agencies for emergency and law enforcement activities upon approval of supervisory staff
• Preventing criminal acts, traffic violations, maintaining public order, and identifying hazardous situations or conditions
• Responding to routine reports of criminal and non-criminal acts
• Responding to routine calls for service, including public assistance and public safety matters
• Directing and controlling traffic
• Conducting crime prevention activities such as residential inspections, business inspections, and community presentations
• Participating in community-oriented policing and problem-solving initiatives
• Providing courthouse and courtroom security, including operation of physical security equipment, searches, and emergency planning
• Assisting in the Carter County Detention Center when necessary
• Transporting prisoners safely and securely
• Performing all other duties as assigned
