During their December meeting, the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics (ODAA) recognized the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 24 for providing 5,000 Young Eagle flights as of June 2023.

“From 2019 to 2023 over 5,000 children have flown discovery flights,” said Gary Manning, President of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 1098 in Shawnee. “The mission of the EAA to adopt the next generation of young pilots is essential to the growth and prosperity of the industry.”

At the meeting, the Commission recognized Gary Manning with a citation from Senator Adam Pugh, the 59th Legislative AERO Caucus Chair, highlighting Manning’s contribution to the industry and relentless efforts to advance the EAA’s mission.

“The pilot community is our primary constituent and serving the flying public is one of the largest pillars of our agency’s foundation,” said Grayson Ardies, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics.

Manning is a member of the EAA Chapter 24 in Oklahoma City and serves on the Ray Scholarship committee and board of directors. Gary also served as President of Pilots Haven Airport, Inc. which owns Twin Lakes Airport (20K2), and has dedicated his life to the aviation and aerospace community by organizing and leading civic and community events for the pilot population across Oklahoma.

Launched in 1992, the Young Eagles program has dedicated 30+ years to giving youth ages 8–17 their first free ride in an airplane. It’s the only program of its kind, with the sole mission to introduce and inspire kids in the world of aviation.

“The EAA Chapters in Oklahoma are working to share the passion of flight with citizens,” said Senator Adam Pugh. “The pilot community boasts over 10,000 pilots in Oklahoma, and as the pilot community ages, it is important to inspire new aviators.”

To date, over 2.3 million young people have enjoyed a free introductory flight through the Young Eagles program. These flights are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers.
