July Commission: Reconstruction on IDL in Tulsa approved; $63 million in contracts awarded
Highlights of the Oklahoma Transportation Commission’s Monday, July 2 meeting include awarding an up to $25 million project on Tulsa's Inner Dispersal Loop and recognizing the Oklahoma Department of Transportation's new state Maintenance Engineer. Contracts were awarded for the construction of a bridge in Moore and resurfacing project in Seminole.
Commissioners approved a nearly $25 million pavement reconstruction project in Tulsa on US-75/US-64/SH-51, also identified as the south leg of the Inner Dispersal Loop. Along with the reconstruction, five bridges will also be rehabilitated along the south and east legs of the IDL.
Also approved was a more than $11 million contract to construct a bridge on S.W. 34th St. over I-35 in Moore. The project is estimated to take more than a year to complete. Patterson recognized representatives from the City of Moore in the audience. "This is a bridge we've been working on with the city for a number of years now…which will help the economic development in the City of Moore. We're proud to partner with the city on this bridge," Patterson said.
A nearly $1 million contract to resurface three miles of SH-9 in Seminole was also approved. The project begins just west of US-270, extends east and is expected to continue into the fall.
Director of Operations Darren Saliba introduced ODOT's new statewide Maintenance Engineer Taylor Henderson. Henderson has been with the department for more than two decades and previously served as maintenance engineer in Division 5's Clinton office in southwest Oklahoma. His duties will include general statewide repair of bridges, interstates and highways; mowing; beautification efforts; litter cleanup and snow and ice removal.
In his report to the commission, ODOT Executive Director Mike Patterson highlighted the department's participation in the Secure Your Load campaign, a concerted effort by Keep Oklahoma Beautiful, Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, Oklahoma Turnpike Authority and Oklahoma Highway Safety Office to remind drivers to properly secure their loads when traveling.
Commissioners voted to award 13 contracts totaling $63 million to improve highways, roads and bridges in 10 counties. Contracts were awarded for projects in Adair, Carter, Cimarron, Cleveland, Haskell, Okmulgee, Seminole, Tulsa, Washington and Washita counties. The eight-member panel, appointed by the governor to oversee the state’s transportation development, awards project contracts for road and bridge construction every month. The commission’s next regular meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, August 6.
