Media invited to attend Construction Career Day Friday, Sept. 16

Monday, September 12, 2016

The media is invited to attend Construction Career Day this Friday, hosted by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation Civil Rights Division and industry partners.

This year’s Construction Career Day, called “Tools to Build Your Future” offers hands-on activities with construction equipment and opportunities for more than 260 students to talk with industry leaders about jobs in construction-related fields. This year’s event will include more than 35 construction companies, materials suppliers and industry partners. Students from Oklahoma City Public Schools and a local technology center are attending.

Media is invited to attend the event on:

Friday, September 25

10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Oklahoma State University - OKC

900 N. Portland in Oklahoma City

Engineering Technology Center, northwest corner of campus

Students will be test operating equipment, climbing electrical poles, welding, visiting with industry leaders and learning employment skills, among other activities. Representatives from ODOT, Oklahoma State University - OKC, OKC Public Schools and the Association of General Contractors will be available.

The construction industry is facing a severe shortage of skilled workers. If not addressed, the shortage will impact the industry’s quality, safety and ability to build the infrastructure needed to meet the demands of a growing population. While many students may not have ever considered a career in construction, the industry offers competitive wages and a variety of employment opportunities for high school graduates.

This event is sponsored by ODOT, Oklahoma State University - OKC, Oklahoma City Public Schools, AGC-Heavy Highway, AGC - Building Chapter, Asphalt Pavers Association and the Oklahoma Concrete Paving Association.
