Engineer Development Program

What Engineering Development is about

The department’s Engineer Development Program (EDP) is structured to provide engineer interns with technical training, practical experience, and exposure to challenging opportunities over approximately one year.

Through the EDP’s one-of-a-kind engineer rotation program, engineer interns spend their first year rotating through several of ODOT’s design disciplines and field locations. After completing this rotation, interns choose a discipline to pursue (reporting location varies) and have the opportunity to engage in their team’s mission. All the while gaining the experience necessary to qualify and obtain professional engineering licensure.

Engineer Rotation Program

ODOT’s Engineer Rotation Program is an opportunity to gain exposure to the many districts, divisions, and people that make up ODOT. The rotation includes time at each of the Central Office Divisions and a construction residency and maintenance district of choice.

Central Office Assignments (17 Weeks in Oklahoma City)

Disciplines to explore at Central Office: bridges and structures, environmental programs, local government, materials, maintenance, roadway design, and traffic engineering.

Field Assignment Locations (15 Weeks in the Districts)

Each District has a headquarters and multiple construction residencies that are located in different cities and towns (choose a district below to learn more). This program allows participants to rotate to one or more maintenance site and residency during their allotted time.

  • 3 weeks are spent with a maintenance crew
  • 12 weeks are spent at a construction residency
