Overview
Most licensed practical nurses (LPN's) work in healthcare facilities, including hospitals, doctorsʼ offices, and nursing homes. Their primary job duty is to provide routine care, observe patientsʼ health, assist doctors and registered nurses, and communicate instructions to patients regarding medication, home-based care, and preventative lifestyle changes.
Education
An LPN needs to graduatefrom an accredited LPN program. LPN programs generally include one year of courseworkand practical applicationat a hospital, vocational technical school or community college.
Career Progression
There are several educational routes that can be taken in pursuit of an RN degree. The most common is a two year program that earns an Associate of Science in Nursing degree (AND). Other options include a hospital diploma program that involves a three year course of study, or earning a four year Bachelor's in Nursing degree. Job Description
Work up patients for physician and manage patient care in correspondence with physician (includes vital signs, vision test, gather patient information such as known allergies, etc.)
Other than working up patients for the physician, office nurse has other duties that include, but not limited to such things as:
- Collect and Review labs and radiology reportsas they are processed to notify physician of any urgency to the patient and to prepare them for provider
- Manage and coordinate patient medical recordsrequest. (disability, handicap parking, school medication list, etc.)
- Take and accomplish physician order for supplies for patients(wheelchair, walkers, etc.)
- Take physician orders to admit patientsto CCMH and SWMC hospital under the provider
- Be able to Navigatethrough an Electronic Medical Records(EMR) aka EHR software
- Order medications for patients
- Preauthorize medications from specialty pharmacies
- Coordinate with drug representativesand other third party partners in patient care and success of patient medication delivery
- Coordinate with health services such as home health, physical therapy, speech therapyto create seamless patient care and patient health updates to the office
- Type reports for providers such as history and physicals and other reports that require medical terminology knowledge
