The agency is overseen by a seven-member State Fire Marshal Commission, appointed by the Governor and subject to Senate confirmation, and has members representing various fire service and safety organizations. The organizations include: statewide association of fire chiefs, statewide association of career & volunteer firefighters, statewide association of electrical workers, statewide organization of professional firefighters, statewide association of municipalities, a fire investigator, and the Governor's Office. Commission members serve a five (5) year term and are responsible for appointing both the State Fire Marshal and the Assistant State Fire Marshal upon recommendation from the State Fire Marshal.
